Abstract

Sudhindranath Dutta is one of the architects of modern Bengali poetry, free from Rabindranath Tagore's influence. In his poetry, 'Urvashi' is not an abstract, divine beauty, but rather a complex metaphor of modern love and despair born from the poet's own intellect. While Rabindranath's Urvashi is universal and benevolent, Sudhindranath's Urvashi is intensely personal, ephemeral, and steeped in the skeptical thought of a decadent age. From 'Tanvi' to 'Uttar Phalguni', Urvashi repeatedly returns in his poetic journey as a cursed muse, expressing the emptiness and dissatisfaction of modern life. Using myth and legend as a foundation, he brings Urvashi down to the dust of the mortal world, creating a unique 'new mythology'.
