Abstract

This article analyzes the multifaceted forms of violence in Punjabi short stories and the nature of the humane counter-narratives built against them. The pre-partition and post-partition Punjab regions bear brutal witness to communal violence and humanitarian catastrophe. As a result, the violent reality has naturally been reflected in Punjabi literature, especially in short stories. However, the stories did not end with descriptions of the violence. In parallel with the violence, a humane response has been constructed in some way in each story. The authors have shown that the potential of humanity is not completely exhausted even amidst extreme inhumanity. These stories, with their humanistic emotions and yearnings, are transformed into Bengali and enrich the Bengali reader with social consciousness which is extremely important in these recent communalism-ridden times.
