Abstract

The library is a timeless institution that bridges the past, present, and future. In a modern society built on the pillars of scientific reasoning, industrialization, and urban development, the library serves as a ‘sanctuary of the mind’. While institutional education provides degrees, true ‘enlightenment’ or ‘self-education’ is nurtured within the walls of a library. Historically, libraries date back to 2600 BC in Sumer, evolving through the legendary repositories of Alexandria and Nalanda to the modern national and digital archives. The primary objective of a public library is the collection, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge to all strata of society without discrimination. In the context of modern society, libraries play a multifaceted role as educational catalysts, centers for social empowerment, and guardians of national progress. Despite their importance, many rural and public libraries face extinction due to a lack of funding and staff. To build a progressive nation, there is an urgent need for a renewed ‘Library Movement’. A library is not just a building full of books; it is a fortress protecting a civilization’s soul.
