‘Amma’ : The Life and Struggle of Kakmara Community (‘আম্মা’ : কাকমারা জাতির জীবন ও সংগ্রাম)

Abstract

‘Amma’ is one of the best short stories of Sushil Jana (1916-2008). The story was first published in 1953. In this story, the storyteller has manifested his view on the life struggle of a wandering community of Medinipur called Kakmara. Literature is the mirror of social life. It is indeed expressed in this short story. Sushil Jana was born and brought up in Medinipur town. So he had witnessed many Kakmara families in his own life. They used to spend their life by begging from wandering conditions. ‘Amma’ is the subject of the story so he has highlighted their lives in this short story. In the discussion article, an attempt has been made to highlight the identity of the Kakmara community and the narrative of their life struggle as described in the story of ‘Amma’.
