Abstract

No one knows the extent of suffering common people had to suffer after partition. Many novelists have written many novels about this but Gourkishore did not follow that path. He wrote about the reasons for partition. Why is the country divided? Where was our error, while fulfilling personal small interests, how low we adopted for the greed of rank!  Gourkishore Ghosh's trilogy ('Jal Pade Pata Nade' - 1961, 'Prem Nei' - 1981 and 'Prateveshi' 1995) is set in 1922 - 47. A dark chapter was written in Bengal as well as the whole of India in the long 25-year political whirlwind. A history of ups and downs of Hindu Muslim relations. This trilogy is about how the relationship between the two communities gets burnt due to political upheaval. In this episode, Gourkishore portrays the vulnerability of Hindu-Muslims by mixing the tragedy of history with the personal tragedy of the characters. The activities of political party leaders like Congress, Muslim League, Hindu Mahasabha etc. are endangering the common people. Excitement throughout the state. Each leader has a unique perspective. Keeping the problem alive became their main tool. It is not wrong to say that duplicity among leaders has always been one of the 'political tools'. When the Congress and the Muslim League split into Hindu parties and Muslim parties unnoticed by everyone, how the seeds of communalism were rooted among the big leaders, Gourkishor brought out the 'suppressed history'. He was a journalist himself. He presented the history of the pre-independence era with that journalistic approach. The difference between the leaders due to sometimes transition or decline of thought also became the main obstacle to Hindu-Muslim union. Sudhamoy was deprived of his Job. The girl of Chobi was died. Shamim-Phulki's love was separated. So we can say, Partition did not carry any message of harmony, but rather fueled the disunity.
