Abstract

‘Bani Basu’ is the most versatile contemporary Bengali author, essayist, critic, poet, translator and of subjects ranging from history and mythology, to society, psychology, adolesence, music, gender’ and others. she has won a number of literary awards, including the SAHITYA AKADEMI. She experiments with story telling techniques, her strong sense of history and sociology and her excellent crafting are best displayed in her novel ‘Maitreya Jataka’ Swet Patherer Thala offers a strong commentary on the plight of widows in india. some of her fictions have been made into films and tv serials. she was awarded the ‘Tarasankar Award’ for Antarghat novel.she is also the recipient of the ‘Sushila Devi Birla’ award and the Sahitya Setu Puruskar. ‘Suchitra Bhattacharya’ one of the prominent bengali women writer, she has created a sensation with her engrossing power of story telling, focusing on the familliar world of middle class calcutta.her fictions draws on conflicts in family relationship, and changing values.Her widely appreciated novels include ‘Kacher Manush’, a sexually liberated female, she deals with men in her life who are emotionally dependent on her.she spoke at length about the genesis of feminist writing in Bengal. she has a large following and is considered a popular writer, yet she maintains high literary standards.
