Abstract
Rabindranath is a world-renowned poet with diverse talents. He was also known as an essayist, novelist, story writer and dramatist. Rabindranath’s work has had an impact on all branches of literature. With the touch of Rabindranath's brilliance, any subject in human thought becomes luminous. His originality and uniqueness are unparalleled. It fascinates, amazes, excites. One such wonderful poem of Rabindranath is 'Katha'. Which was published in 1900. An evocative poem in this anthology is ‘Head Sale’ ('Katha': 21stKartika,1304). The origin of this narrative poem is from the 'Ajnat kaundilyajatakam' belongingto the third volume of the original Buddhist Mahavastu contribution. It should be mentioned that Rabindranath was not familiar with the original 'Mahabastu Karvani' because he did not know the Pali language. He was familiar with Rajendra Lal Mitra's (The Sanskrit Buddhist Literature of Nepal [Calcutta -1882]) short English translation from Pali. Rajendra Lal Mitra's translation tell sthe story of 'Ajnat kaundilya' in the eighth volume of the book. In the second paragraph of that Story, there is talk of the rivalry between Kosalaraja and Kashiraja, in the memoirs of Ajnatkaundilya's previous birth. As a result of that conflict, the song of self-sacrifice, forgiveness and prem-dharma of gentleman began.

(মূল ইংরেজি অনুবাদটি এই রকম— ‘‘Ajnātakaundilya thought over noble truth for three times, and his eyes were opened. He was in one of his former existances a potter who oured a Pratyeka Buddha from a bilious disorder, and obtained form him the boon that he should be the first man to receive the religion of sugata.
Ajnātakaundilya was in another existeuce, a merchant relieved by the amiable and virtuous king Kośola, who, to avoid bloodshed in a war with thd king of Kasi, had abdicated his kindom, and gone into a voluntary exile. While roaring in the Dakshinäpatha he happened to see a whipurecked merchant who was on his way to the king of Kaś ala, on those munificenced he counted of repairing his fallen fortunes. Little did the poor man know that he was addressing the very king of Kośāla whose fortunes were now no better than his own. The king instantly disabused him, gave him and account of his own misfortunes, and expressed his sorrow that he could no longer be useful to a man in distress. The poor merchant, disappointed at the last resort which hope had pointed out to him, fell into a swoon, and remained insensible for a long time.
But a glimpse of hope now shot through the heart of the good king. He remembered that a price had been set on his head; So he persuaded the distressed gentleman, now recovering from the effect of the swoon, to take him alive to the king of Banäres. This spirit of self-sacrifice surprised the king of Kāśi, who now repented of what he had done, and not only gave the merchant a large sum of money, but reinstated the king on his throne’’.
